Frequently Asked Questions

What is a marine survey?
A marine survey refers to an examination of a boat to evaluate its condition, value and compliance with safety regulations. It can be likened to a health check up conducted by a marine surveyor.
Why is it necessary to have a survey?

Marine surveys serve several purposes:

  • Pre Purchase: Looking to purchase a vessel?   Make an informed decision before making a large investment.
  • Insurance: Many insurance providers require an up to date survey report in order to offer coverage.
  • Financing: Banks and financial institutions often demand surveys for boat loans.
  • Safety: They help identify any safety concerns or required repairs.
  • Marina Access: Many marinas require a survey to determine the condition of a vessel before getting a slip.
What types of surveys do you provide?

Our range of surveys includes:

  • Pre Purchase Surveys: Detailed inspections carried out prior to purchasing a boat.
  • Insurance Surveys: Assessments mandated by insurance companies.
  • Appraisal Surveys: Evaluations conducted to determine the market value of a boat.
  • Damage Surveys: Assessing the extent of damage following an accident or incident.
  • Cargo Surveys: An inspection process conducted to assess the condition, quantity, and compliance of cargo during transportation.
How long does a marine survey typically take?

The duration of a survey depends on factors such as the size and type of vessel as well as the extent of the survey being conducted.  On average a survey can take anywhere from a few hours to a full day. Our goal is to conduct a comprehensive inspection, within the efficient timeframe possible.

What will I receive after the survey?

Following the survey you will receive a report encompassing findings, recommendations and any identified issues. The report is comprehensive. Includes photographs, descriptions well as a summary of your vessel’s condition and value.

How frequently should I have my vessel surveyed?

We recommend having your vessel surveyed:

  • Prior to Purchase: Always get a survey before buying a used vessel.
  • Every 2-5 Years: For insurance renewals and to maintain a good condition.
  • After an Incident: If your boat sustains damage or is involved in an accident.
  • Moving to New Marina: You may need to provide a condition survey to satisfy marina entrance requirements.
How much does a marine survey cost?

Various factors contribute to the cost of a survey including the type of vessel, the size of the vessel, and distance from the surveyor.  We provide transparent pricing and can offer a quote based on your specific needs.

How do I prepare my vessel for a survey?

Prior to the survey ensure your vessel is both accessible and clean.  Remove any items that might obstruct movement or a view.  Ensure you have all documents ready including ownership papers and maintenance records.  Preparing for the survey will help ensure the survey process is both smooth and efficient.

Can I attend the survey?

Of course!  We welcome your presence during the survey and will set aside time after the survey is complete to answer any questions you may have.

How do I schedule a survey?

Scheduling your survey is straight forward process.  Simply contact us with the details about your vessel and its location and when you would like us to perform the survey.  Once we schedule your time slot, we will send out a follow message confirming your appointment as well as reminder on the day of the survey.
